Human Rights & Human Rights based approaches

Human Rights include things like the right to life, freedom of expression and many other things. Human rights are inherent to all human beings by virtue of being human and recognise the inherent value of every individual- everyone has human rights. Human rights are set out by the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, which also informs human rights based approaches. The principles of the human rights based approach are;

  • justice

  • equity

  • access

  • inclusion

The primary aim of human rights based approaches are to see everyone’s human rights realised and honoured.

You can see the United Declaration of Human Rights here. You may also wish to have a look at the Australian Human Rights Commission, who work to ensure human rights in Australia.
